Aphasia is a description of a problem with no implication as to the cause of the problem. Mr. Willis's medical work up was very unlikely to have concluded with "aphasia". From the media reports, it is obvious that Mr Willis has been experiencing substantial cognitive decline in recent years particularly with regard to memory. At his age, Alzheimer's Disease is, by far, the most common cause of such decline, and aphasia, in the form of word-finding (anomic aphasia) is very very common as the disease progresses. I do not know the reason(s) that a more informative statement as to Mr. Willis's condition was not provided, but I fear that it is, in some measure, a reflection of our society's inability to deal openly and honestly with Alzheimer Disease and dementia. Someone in Mr. Willis's circle has likely decided that it is unacceptable to say the D word. This shame and stigma too often has a terrible affect on the families and those with the disorder. Also, there has been some speculation that Mr. Willis suffers from Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). The diagnosis of PPA requires the development of progressive language problems in the absence of other cognitive problems such as memory problems which does not appear to be the case here. Furthermore, PPA is often an unusual presentation of Alzheimer's Disease rather than the typical memory issues. As a parent to my young adult son who does not speak due to developmental disability, we as caregivers have learned how to support his communication using signs and gestures (not ASL), low tech picture communication and voice out-put speech devices. These tools are best practice in special education classrooms but adults with speech loss are woefully underserved. Out of necessity, I have become an advocate, author and founder of SayitwithSymbols.com, one of only a few resources for picture communication boards for adults. There are tools and therapies available to help, if caregivers know to look for them. He was approachable, friendly, down to earth……very warm and charming. His hair was dyed blond for this movie and it look pretty natural on him. The scene we witnessed was done by having taken apart a real helicopter body and attaching the main fuselage to a scissors lift which allowed it to have the up and down and rocking motion for the filming against a green screen…….this was later edited to be flying over New York City. The surgery extended her life for another 20 years, with the last 5 years progressively being crippled by aphasia. She was a hard working book keeper, musician, poet and life of every party. No one ever witnessed her with a lack of words! Seeing her frustration at word-finding and watching her heroically try to adapt was heart breaking. She found "tricks" in keeping notes, photos and drawing pictorial descriptions of what she wanted to say. Loved ones became "interpreters" but could not always help. The ability to understand never left, just the ability to chime in.
