Aphasia is a description of a problem with no implication as to the cause of the problem. Mr. Willis's medical work up was very unlikely to have concluded with &quot;aphasia&quot;. From the media reports, it is obvious that Mr Willis has been experiencing substantial cognitive decline in recent years particularly with regard to memory. At his age, Alzheimer's Disease is, by far, the most common cause of such decline, and aphasia, in the form of word-finding (anomic aphasia) is very very common as the disease progresses. I do not know the reason(s) that a more informative statement as to Mr. Willis's condition was not provided, but I fear that it is, in some measure, a reflection of our society's inability to deal openly and honestly with Alzheimer Disease and dementia. Someone in Mr. Willis's circle has likely decided that it is unacceptable to say the D word. This shame and stigma too often has a terrible affect on the families and those with the disorder. <br/>Also, there has been some speculation that Mr. Willis suffers from Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). The diagnosis of PPA requires the development of progressive language problems in the absence of other cognitive problems such as memory problems which does not appear to be the case here. Furthermore, PPA is often an unusual presentation of Alzheimer's Disease rather than the typical memory issues. <br/>It is long past time to take demential out of the closet.
<createDate>2022-04-03T18:39:59.983-04:00</createDate><dislikeCount>2</dislikeCount>
<ignored>false</ignored><level>1</level><likeCount>6</likeCount><parentKey>0</parentKey><replyCount>0</replyCount><token>081810e6-a4e9-4a9e-8c9d-4f978f64eeeb</token><topicKey>10601399</topicKey><topicTitle>Bruce Willis’s nightmare</topicTitle><topicUrl>https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/04/03/opinion/bruce-williss-nightmare/?ia=134283187</topicUrl><touchDate>2022-04-03T18:39:59.983-04:00</touchDate><type>ARTICLE_COMMENT</type><actingUserProfileUrl>http://boston.com/community/user/5631737</actingUserProfileUrl></interaction><interaction><actingUserBlocked>false</actingUserBlocked><actingUserImageUrl>//u.o0bc.com/avatars/no-user-image.gif</actingUserImageUrl><actingUserKey>5380869</actingUserKey><actingUserName>Lola-lola</actingUserName><actingUserType>UNTRUSTED</actingUserType><approvalStatus>UNMODERATED</approvalStatus><archived>false</archived>
I made a similar comment on another piece. As a parent to my young adult son who does not speak due to developmental disability, we as caregivers have learned how to support his communication using signs and gestures (not ASL), low tech picture communication and voice out-put speech devices. These tools are best practice in special education classrooms but adults with speech loss are woefully underserved. Out of necessity, I have become an advocate, author and founder of SayitwithSymbols.com, one of only a few resources for picture communication boards for adults. There are tools and therapies available to help, if caregivers know to look for them. I hope Mr. Willis and his family with seek assistance from a speech and language pathologist to see if using AAC would be an option for him.
<createDate>2022-04-03T15:10:16.020-04:00</createDate><dislikeCount>0</dislikeCount>
<ignored>false</ignored><level>1</level><likeCount>15</likeCount><parentKey>0</parentKey><replyCount>2</replyCount><token>d5162f3e-bdc5-481b-858c-8e0cac9807e2</token><topicKey>10601399</topicKey><topicTitle>Bruce He was approachable, friendly, down to earth……very warm and charming. His hair was dyed blond for this movie and it look pretty natural on him. The scene we witnessed was done by having taken apart a real helicopter body and attaching the main fuselage to a scissors lift which allowed it to have the up and down and rocking motion for the filming against a green screen…….this was later edited to be flying over New York City. <br/><br/>Our appreciation and best to Bruce and his family for that brief encounter back then.
<createDate>2022-04-03T07:54:15.503-04:00</createDate><dislikeCount>0</dislikeCount>
<ignored>false</ignored><level>1</level><likeCount>35</likeCount><parentKey>0</parentKey><replyCount>0</replyCount><token>e7efca40-29ca-4da2-9963-ed054119d9a3</token><topicKey>10601399</topicKey><topicTitle>Bruce Willis’s nightmare</topicTitle><topicUrl>https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/04/03/opinion/bruce-williss-nightmare/?ia=134251304</topicUrl><touchDate>2022-04-03T07:54:15.503-04:00</touchDate><type>ARTICLE_COMMENT</type><actingUserProfileUrl>http://boston.com/community/user/5458304</actingUserProfileUrl></interaction><interaction><actingUserBlocked>false</actingUserBlocked><actingUserImageUrl>//u.o0bc.com/avatars/162/34/80/5251746.png?3</actingUserImageUrl><actingUserKey>5251746</actingUserKey><actingUserName>ManilaCalling</actingUserName><actingUserType>UNTRUSTED</actingUserType><approvalStatus>UNMODERATED</approvalStatus><archived>false</archived>
The good times do not last forever.
<createDate>2022-04-03T07:52:58.029-04:00</createDate><dislikeCount>11</dislikeCount>
<ignored>false</ignored><level>1</level><likeCount>13</likeCount><parentKey>0</parentKey><replyCount>0</replyCount><token>a2e3763d-6806-4246-8e4a-78b15305e044</token><topicKey>10601399</topicKey><topicTitle>Bruce Willis’s nightmare</topicTitle><topicUrl>https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/04/03/opinion/bruce-williss-nightmare/?ia=134251221</topicUrl><totalPost>0</totalPost><touchDate>2022-04-03T07:52:58.029-04:00</touchDate><type>ARTICLE_COMMENT</type><actingUserProfileUrl>http://boston.com/community/user/5251746</actingUserProfileUrl></interaction><interaction><actingUserBlocked>false</actingUserBlocked><actingUserImageUrl>//u.o0bc.com/avatars/no-user-image.gif</actingUserImageUrl><actingUserKey>5093631</actingUserKey><actingUserName>allknowing</actingUserName><actingUserType>UNTRUSTED</actingUserType><approvalStatus>BLOCKED</approvalStatus><archived>false</archived>
oh my gosh, someone in hollywood is sick, so now the world weeps!<br/>Lots of people get sick, everyday, but that doesn't matter does it, cos they're nobodys!
<createDate>2022-04-03T07:52:13.401-04:00</createDate><dislikeCount>48</dislikeCount>
<ignored>false</ignored><level>1</level><likeCount>1</likeCount><parentKey>0</parentKey><replyCount>2</replyCount><token>e67ccac9-cdcc-4580-b72f-53fc71572ef0</token><topicKey>10601399</topicKey><topicTitle>Bruce Willis’s nightmare</topicTitle><topicUrl>https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/04/03/opinion/bruce-williss-nightmare/?ia=134251173</topicUrl><totalPost>0</totalPost><touchDate>2022-04-03T10:35:50.359-04:00</touchDate><type>ARTICLE_COMMENT</type><actingUserProfileUrl>http://boston.com/community/user/5093631</actingUserProfileUrl></interaction><interaction><actingUserBlocked>false</actingUserBlocked><actingUserImageUrl>//u.o0bc.com/avatars/224/50/77/5059296.png?0</actingUserImageUrl><actingUserKey>5059296</actingUserKey><actingUserName>plt062</actingUserName><actingUserType>UNTRUSTED</actingUserType><approvalStatus>UNMODERATED</approvalStatus><archived>false</archived>
Through the miracle of modern medicine and amazing 12 hour brain surgery, someone near and dear to me survived a near-fatal brain aneurism.
